In completing your final revisions of your document, ensure that you have formatted your document to reflect the following requirements before you submit:

Document Formatting

Apply the following formatting to your essay:
  • Use a legible font, such as Times New Roman or Arial, size 12.
  • Double space the entire report, including title page, table of contents and works cited
  • Indent the first line of paragraphs one half inch from the left margin. Use the tab key to move the insertion point rather that the space bar five times.
  • Use one inch margins on all sides -- top, bottom, left and right.

Title Page

Page numbering

The page number is included at the right margin one-half inch (0.5”) from the top edge of the paper. The writer’s last name precedes the page number

  • Open the header section of your document (insert >header or double-click the top margin) and type your last name, making sure that it is right aligned.
  • Next to your name, insert page numbers (insert >page numbers>right aligned).
  • Your title page and table of contents should not be numbered, so start numbering on the first page of the essay, which is usually right after the table of contents.

Works Cited

The works cited page begins on a separate page following your essay and uses hanging indents. The sources are listed alphabetically by the author’s last name, or the first word in the entry if there's no author. Type in the title, 'Works Cited' 1” from the top of the page, center aligned. Include your last name and page number in the upper right corner, just as you did for the essay.

In-Text Citations

In MLA style, referring to the works of others in your text is done by using what is known as parenthetical citation. This method involves placing relevant source information in parentheses after a quote or a paraphrase. Please refer to the Owl Purdue website for more specific guidance on how to format your parenthetical citations.

Table of Contents

Include a table of contents similar to the one shown below. Please review the video below to properly set your leader tabs.

Spelling & Grammar

In addition to using the spelling and grammar feature in Word or Google docs, read your work over a few times before printing. Once printed, read it again because it's easier to catch mistakes this way. Also, give your document to someone to proofread one last time. Make any final changes on the digital file.
