The Personal Project is a culminating activity of the IB Middle Years Program. It is an important student-directed inquiry, usually starting at the end of Grade 9 and extending into the spring and completed at the at the end of Grade 10. The Personal Project can take the form of a piece of independent research and/or investigation that takes the form of a student’s choice, such as a research paper, an original written play or short story, the building of a piece of furniture or other product, and so on .It provides an opportunity for students to produce a truly creative and personal piece of work while they demonstrate the ATL skills they have acquired through their years in the IB Middle Years Program.

How will the Personal Project be assessed?

The objectives of the Personal Project state the specific targets that are set for learning. They define what you will accomplish as a result of completing the personal project and relate directly to the assessment criteria provided by the IB.

What are the aims?
  • Participate in a sustained, self-directed inquiry within a global context
  • Generate creative new insights and develop deeper understandings through in-depth investigation
  • Demonstrate responsible action through, or as a result of learning
  • Demonstrate the skills, attitudes and knowledge required to complete a project over an extended period of time
  • Communicate effectively in a variety of situations
  • Appreciate the process of learning and take pride in your accomplishments
  • Reflect on your learning and knowledge (on your own and with others)
  • Move towards thoughtful and positive action
  • Develop confidence as lifelong learners

Why are the Global Contexts so important to the Personal Project ?

The Global Contexts are the heart of the personal Project. The one you choose will give everyone an initial idea of why you did your project. It lets everyone looking at your project know about your passion and direction. Two of the four assessment criteria directly assess your focus on your chosen Global Context.

Whatever form the project takes, it is critically important that it focuses around one specifically chosen Global Context below to demonstrate why their project matters.

Who will help me with my Personal Project?

You will be assigned a supervisor (Design teacher) who will give you the information you need to complete your project. It is important that you have a discussion with your supervisor about your choice to see whether or not your intentions are realistic. After all MYP students submit their topics to the Personal Project Coordinator ( , they will assign you a Mentor. Your mentor will be a faculty member who has interest and experience in the topic you selected and will provide expertise, support, guidance, and feedback.

It is important that you attend all meetings in the specified time slot that you arrange with your mentor and that you come to the meetings on time, with all the necessary materials.

When can I work on the Personal Project?
You should work on your Personal Project during your design class and mostly during your own time as necessary to complete all the requirements. If you adhere to your deadlines, you'll be sure your tasks will be completed on time. Don’t forget about your other school work though. Summer, winter break, and spring breaks are great times to catch up and focus on your personal project.

How do I choose my Personal Project?
Think of something you are passionate about. What do you like to do? What do you like but want to learn more about? What is something you like that you could share with someone else? If you have an answer to any of these questions, you have your topic.
